COURSE CURRICULUM

The Research in Theoretical Physics master’s program at Leiden University combines rigorous coursework with substantial research experience, preparing students for careers in fundamental physics and doctoral studies. At the start of the program, students create a personalised study plan in consultation with the Study Advisor in Physics, outlining their courses and research projects for the two-year duration. This ensures a flexible yet structured approach, allowing students to focus on specific subdisciplines of interest while maintaining a broad understanding of theoretical physics.The curriculum consists of mandatory courses (30 EC) that provide foundational knowledge across core areas of theoretical physics, electives (42 EC) that allow students to tailor their program to specialised topics, and research projects (48 EC) that provide hands-on experience in modelling, computation, and theoretical analysis. Students engage directly with cutting-edge research topics, ranging from High Energy Particle Physics and Cosmology to Condensed Matter Theory and the Theoretical Physics of Life Processes. This combination of courses and research ensures that graduates are equipped with both conceptual understanding and practical skills needed to contribute to frontier research.Educational methods are varied to support deep learning and skill development. Students participate in lectures, working groups, presentations, individual papers, colloquia, lab work, and literature study. These methods foster critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and scientific communication skills, enabling students to work independently and collaboratively on complex theoretical problems.A unique feature of the program is its connection with the Delta Institute for Theoretical Physics, a consortium of the institutes for theoretical physics at Leiden, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. Through this partnership, students have access to advanced MSc courses and exposure to the latest developments in the field, facilitating a strong connection between their education and current research frontiers.Graduates of the Research in Theoretical Physics program are well-prepared for PhD studies, research positions in academia, or roles in high-tech and analytical industries.
