COURSE CURRICULUM
The two-year Master of Science program in Physics, with a specialisation in Quantum Matter and Optics, offers a balanced combination of experimental research and theoretical coursework, with approximately half of the program dedicated to each. This specialisation is closely linked to Leiden’s research program in quantum optics and quantum matter, providing students with the opportunity to explore how unique material properties emerge from quantum confinement, electron-electron interactions, and electron spin, as well as to study the quantum properties of light and photon-matter interactions. The curriculum consists of mandatory courses (18 EC) that provide foundational knowledge in quantum physics, optics, and materials science, and electives (45 EC) that allow students to tailor their studies to individual interests. Two research projects (60 EC in total) form a core component of the program, offering hands-on experience in advanced experimental techniques, computational modelling, and theoretical investigations. At the start of the program, students work with the Study Advisor in Physics to create a personalised study plan, outlining courses and research projects for the full two-year period. This ensures a structured yet flexible approach that aligns with each student’s academic and professional goals.Educational methods in the program are varied and designed to foster active learning and research skills. Students engage in lectures, working groups, presentations, individual papers, colloquia, lab work, and literature study. This combination of methods helps develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and practical expertise while providing experience in scientific communication and collaboration.Graduates of the Quantum Matter and Optics specialisation are well-prepared for careers in academic research, quantum technology industries, and high-tech laboratories. The program also provides excellent preparation for PhD studies in experimental or theoretical quantum physics. By integrating theoretical knowledge with hands-on research experience, the specialisation equips students with the skills and understanding necessary to contribute to cutting-edge developments in quantum optics, quantum materials, and related fields.
