COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Physics with a specialisation in Cosmology offers students a rigorous and research-focused education in the study of the universe, from its origins to its large-scale structure and evolution. At the start of the program, students create a Master Study Plan in consultation with the Study Advisor in Physics, outlining their courses and research projects for the two-year duration. This personalised plan ensures a structured yet flexible approach, allowing students to align their studies with specific research interests and career goals. The curriculum is divided into courses (60 EC) and research (60 EC). Courses include 33 EC of mandatory modules that provide a strong foundation in cosmology, astrophysics, and theoretical physics, alongside 27 EC of electives that allow students to tailor their studies to individual interests within the field. The research component is comprised of two major projects: the first research project (30 EC) and the master’s project in Cosmology (30 EC). These projects offer hands-on experience in theoretical and observational cosmology, enabling students to develop critical analytical skills and gain expertise in data analysis, simulation, and modelling techniques. Detailed programs may differ slightly depending on whether students are enrolled in the Physics or Astronomy master’s track, but all include a core set of cosmology courses ensuring a cohesive foundation.Educational methods are varied and designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills. Students participate in lectures, seminars, colloquia, lab work, work groups, individual papers, presentations, and active research projects. This combination ensures that graduates are prepared to conduct independent research, communicate complex scientific concepts, and contribute effectively to collaborative scientific endeavours.Graduates of the program are well-equipped for careers in academic research, observational and theoretical astrophysics, space agencies, and high-tech industries. The program also provides excellent preparation for those pursuing doctoral studies, offering a comprehensive understanding of cosmology alongside hands-on research experience at the forefront of physics and astronomy.
