COURSE CURRICULUM
The two-year Master of Science program in Physics, with a specialisation in Biological and Soft Matter, combines theoretical coursework with hands-on experimental research, providing a balanced and interdisciplinary approach to understanding complex physical and biological systems. Approximately half of the program is devoted to experimental research, while the other half focuses on theoretical courses, ensuring that students gain both practical skills and deep conceptual knowledge. The curriculum consists of mandatory courses (18 EC) that provide a strong foundation in core principles, electives (45 EC) that allow students to tailor their program to specific interests, and two research projects (24 EC and 36 EC) that offer in-depth experience in experimental and computational investigations. At the start of the program, students create a personalised study plan in consultation with the Study Advisor in Physics, detailing the courses and research projects they will undertake over the two-year period. This flexible structure ensures that students can focus on areas aligned with their career goals or scientific interests.Educational methods are diverse and designed to support active learning and research skills. Students engage in lectures, working groups, presentations, individual papers, colloquia, laboratory work, and literature study. This combination of teaching methods allows students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and practical laboratory expertise while gaining experience in scientific communication and collaboration. The program’s dual focus on biological physics and soft matter physics enables students to explore a wide range of topics. Biological Physics examines the physical processes of biomolecules, cellular dynamics, and signalling mechanisms, while Soft Matter Physics investigates the mechanical, geometrical, and self-assembly properties of soft materials such as foams and granular media. This interdisciplinary training equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to pursue careers in academic research, biotechnology, materials science, and related industries, or to continue their studies in PhD programs.
