COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc program in Physics at Leiden University offers students a flexible and research-intensive pathway to specialise in cutting-edge areas of both theoretical and experimental physics. The program provides eight specialisations, including five research-oriented tracks: Theoretical Physics, Quantum Matter and Optics, Biological and Soft Matter Physics, and Cosmology. Each of these research tracks combines coursework with substantial research projects, preparing students for careers in academia, research institutions, or further PhD studies.Theoretical Physics focuses on advanced concepts in theoretical models, with students spending three-fifths of their two-year program on coursework and completing a nine-month research project. Quantum Matter and Optics and Biological and Soft Matter Physics are experimental tracks, each consisting of half coursework and two hands-on research projects. The Cosmology track is offered jointly with the Department of Astronomy and covers observational, theoretical, and simulation-based astrophysics projects.Three applied or interdisciplinary tracks are also available: Physics and Education, Physics and Business Studies, and Physics and Science Communication and Society. These combine at least one year of research-oriented physics training with specialised courses and practical experience in education, business, or science communication. For instance, the Physics and Education program includes a teaching internship at a Dutch high school, while Physics and Business Studies incorporates an internship in a company setting.The curriculum across all specialisations includes mandatory courses, electives, and one or two research projects, with educational methods such as lectures, working groups, lab work, presentations, and individual research. This structure equips students with both in-depth physics expertise and transferable skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and practical application. Graduates leave the program prepared for diverse career paths, ranging from scientific research and high-tech innovation to education, entrepreneurship, and public engagement in science.
