COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s specialisation Physics and Science Communication and Society at Leiden University combines rigorous physics research with extensive training in science communication. The program spans two years, with the first year dedicated to a physics research component and the second year focused on Science Communication and Society. The physics component includes compulsory courses, a research project, and electives, and can be extended with an additional 20 EC for further research experience. The Science Communication and Society component features specialized courses, a project proposal, and one or more internships, allowing students to apply communication skills in practical settings. Educational methods include lectures, colloquia, lab work, seminars, work groups, presentations, research projects, and individual papers, providing a diverse learning experience. The program emphasizes close, personalized guidance, with a small intake and a high staff-to-student ratio, enabling direct interaction with lecturers, PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers. Students receive support from a Study Advisor who helps design their curriculum and provides ongoing mentorship. Research projects are conducted within small, interactive groups, often extending beyond formal hours and fostering a collaborative environment. Through this combination of advanced physics training and applied communication skills, graduates are prepared to bridge the gap between scientific expertise and societal understanding, becoming either physics researchers who can effectively communicate their work or science communicators with a strong foundation in physics.
