COURSE CURRICULUM
The Physics and Education master’s specialisation at Leiden University is a two-year program worth 120 European Credit Transfer System (EC) points, divided equally between a Physics component and an Education component. The first year focuses on the Physics component, which comprises mandatory courses, elective courses, and a research project, totaling 60 EC. This component ensures students gain advanced knowledge and research experience in physics, preparing them for a scientifically informed approach to teaching. The second year consists of the Education component, also 60 EC, provided by the Leiden Graduate School of Teaching. It includes education courses and practical teaching experience, enabling students to apply pedagogical theory in classroom settings. Students also have the option to participate in the World Teachers program, a 60 EC program offered in Dutch and English, which combines international teaching practice with education courses and provides additional practical experience for those interested in global teaching opportunities. For students who have completed a minor in Education during their bachelor’s studies, only 30 EC of specific education modules are required, with the remaining 30 EC added to physics electives. The Education component is designed to start after the successful completion of the Physics modules, either in August/September or January/February. Through this combination of in-depth physics training and practical pedagogical experience, the program equips graduates with the qualifications to teach physics at the secondary school level, along with a strong foundation in both scientific research and effective teaching methods. This integration ensures that graduates are capable of bridging scientific knowledge with educational practice, fostering both expertise in physics and professional teaching skills. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, critical thinking, and the ability to engage students effectively, producing teachers who are well-prepared to inspire and educate future learners in the field of physics.
