COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s specialisation Molecular, Cellular and Organismal Biology at Leiden University offers students the opportunity to integrate different levels of biological research, from molecular and cellular processes to organismal interactions and adaptations. The program is designed to provide both a broad understanding of the biological sciences and the chance to specialise in a particular area of interest. Central to the program is the exploration of molecular mechanisms underlying health, disease, and adaptation to environmental factors such as light, stress, pathogens, and ecological or social conditions. Students work with a wide range of model organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals, both invertebrates and vertebrates. The curriculum reflects this interdisciplinary approach, consisting of an orientation course, advanced training in statistics, specialised courses in genomic architecture, compulsory courses, electives, and a substantial research project. The research component, which can range from 60 to 90 EC, is a cornerstone of the program, giving students the chance to gain hands-on experience and contribute to scientific inquiry at the cutting edge of biology. Educational methods are diverse and include individual papers, group projects, lab work, seminars, and research projects, fostering both independent and collaborative learning. In addition to academic training, the program offers comprehensive study guidance.
