COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Mathematics program at Leiden University offers six distinct specialisations, each designed to cater to different interests and career paths. The Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory specialisation is a two-year research-focused track that allows students to explore deep mathematical structures and gain expertise in core areas of pure mathematics. Applied Mathematics emphasises mathematical modelling, dynamical systems, and data-driven methods, addressing challenges in physics, biology, and other applied fields.The Mathematics and High-Tech Innovation specialisation, available from September 2026, combines advanced mathematics courses with interdisciplinary study and an industrial placement, preparing students for careers in high-tech industries. Mathematics and Education (partly in Dutch) trains students to become mathematics teachers while strengthening their academic knowledge. Mathematics and Science Communication and Society focuses on effectively communicating complex mathematical ideas through journalism, museums, and public outreach. Finally, Mathematics and Business Studies merges mathematics training with business and entrepreneurship education, equipping students for industry and management roles.Courses in each specialisation may include master-level classes offered at Leiden University, options from the national Dutch Mastermath program, and courses provided by other institutions, such as Delft University of Technology. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their studies to their academic interests and career ambitions while gaining rigorous mathematical expertise.
