COURSE CURRICULUM

The High-Tech Innovation specialisation within the Mathematics MSc at Leiden University combines rigorous mathematical training with practical interdisciplinary experience. The curriculum is divided into a Mathematics component and a High-Tech Innovation (HTI) component. The Mathematics component includes lecture courses, including options from the national Mastermath program (40 EC), and a mathematics research project (20 EC). The HTI component consists of an orientation course (3 EC), core electives focused on interdisciplinary applications (27 EC), and a research project conducted within a high-tech company or partner institution (30 EC).A variety of educational methods are used throughout the program to support learning, including lectures, seminars, working groups, computer assignments, literature study, presentations, individual papers, and hands-on research projects. Students also have the opportunity to complete an internship as part of their HTI training. Study guidance is provided by mathematics study advisors, who assist with course selection and program planning, and by supervisors who offer one-on-one mentoring and feedback during the final research project. This combination of structured coursework, practical experience, and personalised support equips students with both advanced mathematical expertise and the skills needed to apply mathematics to real-world high-tech innovation challenges.
