COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Education master’s specialisation at Leiden University is structured over two years, combining a mathematics component in the first year with an education component in the second year, offered by the Leiden Graduate School of Teaching. Students can also choose to participate in the World Teachers program, which provides an international dimension to the education training.The mathematics component consists of 60 EC, including a 30 EC research project and 30 EC of courses corresponding to the research topic. The education component (60 EC, in Dutch) includes 30 EC of education courses and 30 EC of teaching practice. In the World Teachers program (60 EC, in Dutch and English), students complete 30 EC of education courses and 30 EC of international teaching practice. Students who have already completed a minor in Education during their BSc only need 30 EC of specific education modules, with the remaining 30 EC added to the mathematics electives. The education component can be started in August/September or January/February after completing the mathematics modules.Educational methods include lectures, colloquia, seminars, working groups, individual papers, presentations, research projects, internships, and school practice. Mathematics study advisors are available for guidance regarding the study program, and during the final research project, students work closely with a supervisor who provides one-on-one feedback and support. This combination of rigorous mathematics training and practical teaching experience equips graduates to become qualified and effective secondary school mathematics teachers.
