COURSE CURRICULUM

The two-year Foundations of Computing program (120 EC) is a research-oriented master’s degree that equips students with advanced knowledge of computer science fundamentals and their applications. The curriculum is structured into three main components: a core program worth 36 EC, a set of specialisation courses and seminars totaling 42 EC, and a Master’s Thesis Research Project also worth 42 EC. This structure allows students to build a strong foundation while also pursuing research in areas of personal or professional interest. The program prepares students to work at the frontiers of computing, making them ready for careers in academia, industry, or research institutes. To succeed, students are expected to enter the program with strong prior knowledge and skills. Essential prerequisites include proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Java, or Python, as well as solid understanding of mathematics, particularly linear algebra, complex numbers, and discrete mathematics including set theory, graphs, logic, data structures, and algorithms. Familiarity with computational complexity theory, especially NP-hardness and reductions, is also expected, alongside good knowledge of logic, proofs, and theoretical foundations of computation. Additionally, students must demonstrate strong academic reading and writing skills, be proficient in LaTeX, and possess an excellent command of English in both written and spoken communication. Just as importantly, the program requires an independent and critical research attitude. The teaching methods are varied and designed to combine theory with practice, including lectures, computer labs, assignments, literature studies, presentations, individual research papers, and collaborative working groups. This combination ensures that students gain hands-on experience while deepening their theoretical understanding. By balancing rigorous coursework with research, the program provides graduates with the expertise and adaptability to engage with the rapidly evolving landscape of computer science and to contribute to future developments in the field.
