COURSE CURRICULUM

The Developmental Psychology specialisation within the Research Master’s in Psychology at Leiden University offers a comprehensive and research-oriented program focused on understanding emotional, cognitive, and social development across childhood and adolescence. The curriculum combines general courses, track-specific courses, electives, research internships, and a master’s thesis to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills. General courses, totaling 40 ECTS, provide advanced training in academic and research methods, including lectures, seminars, small-group discussions, and practical exercises. Track-specific courses, worth 20 ECTS, deepen students’ understanding of key theories, issues, and research domains within developmental psychology. Students can further personalise their program with 15 ECTS of electives from the Institute of Psychology or related research master programs, allowing them to focus on specific interests such as brain and cognition or applied areas like child and adolescent psychology. A core component of the program is the research internship, which provides hands-on experience in real research settings. Students learn to design studies, collect and analyse data, and engage with expert researchers, preparing them for future academic or professional roles. The program culminates in a 25-ECTS master’s thesis, where students develop a research question, conduct empirical research, analyse findings, and present their work under the supervision of academic staff. Educational methods combine lectures, interactive work groups, practical skill-building sessions, and online resources, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical contexts, gain proficiency in research tools, and engage critically with peer work.
