COURSE CURRICULUM
The Research Master track in Cognitive Neuroscience at Leiden University offers an advanced and comprehensive training in the study of human cognition from psychological, computational, and neuroscientific perspectives. The program combines theoretical knowledge with extensive methodological skills, enabling students to design and conduct independent, high-quality research. General coursework, amounting to 40 ECTS, provides advanced training in academic and research skills, with a strong emphasis on immediate application to individual projects. Learning takes place in a dynamic environment of lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and small group work, fostering both critical and collaborative engagement. The track-specific component (20 ECTS) consists of four advanced content courses that delve into key theories, debates, and empirical findings in cognitive neuroscience. These courses help students develop expertise in the mechanisms underlying perception, memory, language, decision-making, and other cognitive functions.Students further personalise their studies through 15 ECTS of electives. These can be used to deepen their focus on cognitive neuroscience or to broaden their academic scope with courses from other research master tracks within the Institute of Psychology or related programs at Leiden and beyond. Electives allow for tailored preparation for future careers, whether in academia, applied research, or interdisciplinary domains.A central element of the program is the research internship, where students gain hands-on experience working closely with expert researchers. The internship provides exposure to diverse methodologies, including neuroimaging, computational modelling, and experimental design. Students may participate in developing and conducting studies, analysing data, or preparing research proposals, offering valuable preparation for their thesis. The program culminates in the master’s thesis (25 ECTS), carried out in the second year. Students first conduct a literature review and develop a research proposal before implementing their project. This process offers the opportunity to contribute original insights to the field while acquiring the skills necessary for future academic or professional careers.
