COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Biology program at Leiden University offers a diverse range of specialisations, allowing students to tailor their studies according to their interests and career goals. The research-oriented specialisations focus on scientific investigation and knowledge development. Biodiversity and Sustainability equips students to understand biological processes and contribute to creating a sustainable society. Evolutionary Biology explores how environmental factors influence evolution and the mechanisms underlying evolutionary processes. Molecular, Cellular and Organismal Biology provides in-depth insights into how organisms function and respond to environmental changes at multiple biological levels. Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology prepares students for careers addressing key challenges in agriculture, healthcare, and biotechnology through advanced genetic and molecular approaches.In addition to these research specialisations, the program offers practical-oriented tracks that integrate biology research with training for specific professional paths. Biology and Business Studies combines scientific expertise with management and entrepreneurial skills, preparing students for careers in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries. Biology and Science Communication and Society (SCS) trains students to communicate scientific knowledge effectively, including journalism and public engagement. Biology and Education, taught partly in Dutch, prepares students for teaching careers by combining research training with pedagogical skills.The curriculum of the research-oriented specialisations typically consists of a theoretical component (minimum 30 EC), which includes the Specialisation Orientation Course (2 EC), Advanced Statistics (4 EC), Skills for Scientists (6 EC), compulsory courses (9–18 EC), and elective courses. The research component includes one or more research projects (60–90 EC), culminating in the MSc thesis. For the practical-oriented specialisations, students combine at least one year of research-focused coursework (60 EC) with an additional year of training (60 EC) tailored to their chosen career path.Educational methods across all specialisations are varied and interactive, including lectures, colloquia, literature studies, individual papers, presentations, research projects, working groups, and book exams. This combination of theoretical knowledge, practical research experience, and professional training ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia, industry, communication, education, and other biology-related fields.
