COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s specialisation Biology and Science Communication and Society (SCS) combines advanced biological research with training in science communication, focusing on the interaction between science and society. The program is structured in two main components: a Biology component in the first year and an SCS component in the second year. The Biology component, which can be extended from 60 to 80 EC through additional courses or an extended research project, includes Advanced Theory courses and lectures (24 EC) and a substantial Research Project in Biology (36 EC). This ensures that students develop both a solid scientific foundation and hands-on research skills.The SCS component, comprising 40–60 EC, focuses on translating scientific knowledge into forms accessible and meaningful to diverse audiences. Students take SCS Courses (23 EC) to gain theoretical and practical understanding of science communication, followed by the development of an SCS Project Proposal (3 EC) to plan their communication strategies. They then apply these skills during SCS Internships (14–34 EC), gaining practical experience in settings such as media organisations, museums, governmental institutions, or communication departments in research-intensive organisations. This component equips students to communicate complex biological concepts effectively, fostering public understanding and engagement with science.Educational methods throughout the program are varied and interactive, including colloquia, lectures, literature study, lab work, research projects, individual papers, presentations, working groups, and internships. By integrating rigorous biological research with practical communication training, graduates are prepared for careers at the interface of science and society, such as science journalism, public outreach, educational initiatives, policy advising, and roles within communication teams of scientific organisations. The program ensures that students not only excel in research but also develop the skills to convey scientific knowledge in ways that inform, inspire, and influence society.
