COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s specialisation in Business Studies within the MSc Biology program is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in both biological research and business management. The curriculum is divided into two main components, with the first year focused on advanced biology training and the second year dedicated to business studies, allowing students to develop expertise in both scientific research and managerial skills.The Biology component, which accounts for 60–80 EC, includes a substantial Research Project in Biology (36 EC), giving students hands-on experience in designing and conducting independent research. This project is complemented by advanced theory courses and lectures (24 EC), which provide in-depth knowledge in specialised areas of biology and strengthen analytical and critical thinking skills. Together, these courses ensure that students acquire both the practical and theoretical expertise necessary for high-level research in the life sciences.The Business Studies component, comprising 40–60 EC, focuses on developing management and decision-making skills applicable in R&D-intensive organisations. Students take Management Courses (15 EC) and Business Research Methods (5 EC) to build a solid foundation in business principles and analytical techniques. They can further tailor their studies through Business Electives (<20 EC), choosing topics that match their professional interests. A key element of this component is the Management Internship (20–40 EC), which provides practical experience in applying business concepts within real-world organisational settings, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice.Educational methods throughout the program are varied and interactive, including lectures, colloquia, lab work, seminars, individual papers, research projects, presentations, and working groups. This combination of research, theory, and practical application ensures that graduates of the specialisation are well-prepared for careers at the intersection of biology and business, equipped to take on managerial responsibilities and contribute to innovation in science-driven organisations.
