The master’s specialisation in Bioinformatics is a research-oriented program that trains students to apply computational approaches to solve complex biological and biomedical questions. The core courses provide a foundation in computational biology, programming, statistics, and data analysis, while the specialisation courses allow students to deepen their expertise in areas such as genomics, systems biology, machine learning, and advanced modelling techniques. The program culminates in the Master’s Thesis Research Project, where students conduct original, independent research, often in collaboration with research institutes or industry partners, gaining valuable hands-on experience in computational biology.Because of its advanced focus, the program requires students to enter with a solid foundation in both computational and biological sciences. Applicants are expected to have good programming skills in Python and a basic command of Linux, as well as knowledge of algorithms, data structures, computing theory, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. In addition, students should possess a fundamental understanding of biology, including cell and molecular biology, genetics, and DNA/RNA processes. Proficiency in statistics, along with strong academic reading and writing skills—ideally including experience with LaTeX—is also expected. An excellent command of English, both written and spoken, is essential, as well as the ability to work independently with a critical research attitude.The program employs a variety of educational methods to ensure students develop both theoretical understanding and practical expertise. These include colloquia, lectures, seminars, literature studies, lab work, individual papers, presentations, and working groups. The most significant component is the Master’s Thesis Research Project, which allows students to apply computational tools to real-world biological or medical datasets and contribute to advancements in fields such as genomics, personalised medicine, or systems biology. Overall, this specialisation prepares graduates for careers in academic research, bioinformatics-driven industries, and healthcare innovation.
