COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s program in Biodiversity and Sustainability offers a curriculum designed to provide students with both a solid theoretical foundation and extensive hands-on research experience. The program begins with the Specialisation Orientation Course (3 EC), which introduces students to the central themes of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and sustainability. This is followed by Advanced Statistics (3 EC), equipping students with essential analytical skills for handling complex ecological and biological data, and Genomic Architecture (6 EC), which provides insights into the genetic basis of biodiversity and its role in ecosystem function and adaptation. Together, these initial courses create a framework for understanding the biological and methodological foundations necessary for advanced study.The curriculum also includes 18 EC of compulsory courses, which deepen knowledge in key areas such as ecology, conservation biology, and sustainability science. Students can further personalise their studies through elective courses (0–30 EC), allowing them to explore specialised topics that align with their research interests and career goals, ranging from climate change and conservation policy to advanced molecular techniques. The most substantial element of the program is the research project (60–90 EC), where students conduct independent, cutting-edge research under the guidance of faculty. This project not only develops technical expertise in experimental design, data collection, and analysis but also fosters critical thinking and creativity in solving real-world biodiversity challenges.The educational methods are diverse and interactive, reflecting the program’s emphasis on both theory and practice. Students participate in colloquia, lectures, and seminars for theoretical grounding, while lab work, research projects, and individual papers strengthen practical and analytical skills. Presentations, group work, and workshops further enhance communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities, ensuring graduates are well prepared for professional roles. By combining rigorous scientific training with sustainability as a guiding principle, the program equips students to support, conserve, and manage biodiversity and ecosystem services in academic, policy, and applied contexts.
