COURSE CURRICULUM

Leiden University’s two-year Master’s program in Astronomy offers seven specialised tracks, each designed to provide in-depth knowledge and skills tailored to specific areas of the field. In the Astronomy Research specialisation, students follow a tailor-made program to develop into independent and resourceful scientists. Astronomy and Instrumentation focuses on the development of high-tech instruments, giving students hands-on experience with state-of-the-art technology. Astronomy and Data Science emphasizes the use of modern data mining and machine learning techniques, reflecting the data-rich nature of contemporary astronomy. Astronomy and Cosmology explores all aspects of modern cosmology, combining observation, theory, simulation, and interpretation to understand the universe’s structure and evolution. Astronomy and Business Studies integrates astronomy training with management and entrepreneurship skills, preparing students for careers in the space industry or related sectors. Astronomy and Science Communication and Society combines research with science communication, including journalism and educational outreach, while Astronomy and Education, taught partly in Dutch, equips students for teaching science at the high school level. All specialisations share a set of core courses that provide a strong foundation in astrophysics. These include the Origin and Evolution of the Universe, Galaxies: Structure, Dynamics and Evolution, Interstellar Medium, Stellar Structure and Evolution, and Star and Planet Formation. In addition, students can take general astronomy courses such as Large Scale Structure and Galaxy Formation, Simulation and Modeling in Astrophysics (AMUSE), and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), allowing them to tailor their study path according to personal interests and career goals.Through a combination of theoretical instruction, hands-on laboratory work, computational modeling, and observational training, students acquire both practical and conceptual expertise. This flexibility enables graduates to pursue advanced academic research, technological innovation, science communication, teaching, or professional roles in industry and public institutions. The program equips students with the knowledge, analytical skills, and technical competence to contribute meaningfully to the field of astronomy and related disciplines.
