COURSE CURRICULUM
The Astronomy Research master’s specialisation at Leiden University is designed to train students in advanced astronomical data analysis, modeling, and large-scale simulations, integrating knowledge from Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. At the start of the program, students create a Master Study Plan in consultation with the Study Advisor, detailing courses and research projects for the two-year curriculum. This tailored plan ensures that students can focus on their specific research interests while gaining a broad foundation in astronomical methods. The curriculum consists of 60 EC of elective courses, divided into 36 EC of astronomy-focused courses and 24 EC of other relevant courses. These electives allow students to acquire specialized skills, ranging from observational techniques to computational methods, preparing them to handle large datasets and simulations in modern astronomy. In addition, 60 EC is dedicated to research projects, including a first research project of 30 EC and a Master’s Research Project of 30 EC. These research components give students hands-on experience in addressing complex scientific questions under the guidance of expert faculty.Educational methods include lectures, working groups, practical classes, lab work, individual papers, presentations, colloquia, and active participation in research projects. Assessment is based on written and oral exams, homework assignments, presentations, and reports, such as scientific papers or literature studies.Graduates of this specialisation are equipped to pursue careers in academia, research institutes, or industry, particularly in areas requiring advanced data analysis, computational modeling, and interdisciplinary scientific problem-solving. The program also provides excellent preparation for PhD studies in astronomy, astrophysics, or related fields, fostering the skills necessary to conduct independent, cutting-edge research in a data-rich and rapidly evolving field.
