COURSE CURRICULUM

Leiden University’s master’s specialisation in Astronomy and Science Communication and Society combines advanced astronomy training with practical and theoretical education in science communication. At the start of the program, students develop a Master Study Plan in consultation with the Study Advisor, outlining courses and research projects for the two-year curriculum.The first year focuses on the Astronomy component, typically consisting of 60 to 80 EC. Students take core astronomy courses, other astronomy electives, and a limited number of non-astronomy courses. The year culminates in a Master’s Research Project in Astronomy, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical research setting.The second year is devoted to the Science Communication and Society component, which ranges from 40 to 60 EC. Students take SCS courses to develop skills in communicating complex astronomical concepts to diverse audiences, including the general public, educational institutions, and media. This component includes a project proposal course, where students plan and structure a communication project, and an internship or multiple internships, offering hands-on experience in professional science communication contexts.Educational methods throughout the program are varied and interactive, including lectures, colloquia, working groups, research projects, lab work, presentations, seminars, and individual papers. These methods ensure students gain both deep scientific expertise and practical communication experience.Graduates of this program are equipped to bridge the gap between scientific research and society, making them suitable for careers in science communication, public outreach, education, media, and policy advisory roles, or to continue with academic research into the interactions between science and society. The program emphasizes both the mastery of astronomy and the ability to translate scientific knowledge effectively for a wider audience.
