COURSE CURRICULUM

Leiden University’s master’s specialisation in Astronomy and Instrumentation is structured to provide a comprehensive education in both astronomical science and the technologies that make modern observations possible. At the start of the program, students collaborate with a study advisor to draw up a Master Study Plan, which outlines the courses and research projects they will undertake over the next two academic years. The curriculum is divided into three main components: mandatory courses, electives, and research projects. The mandatory courses, totaling 12 EC, include “Astronomical Telescopes and Instruments” and “Detection of Light a + b.” These courses give students a solid foundation in the physics, design, and functioning of telescopes and detection systems, which are essential for conducting modern astronomical research.Elective courses, accounting for 48 EC, provide students with flexibility to tailor their studies according to their interests. These electives include Astronomy Core Courses, instrumentation-related astronomy courses, and a selection of additional astronomy courses. This structure allows students to combine deep technical knowledge with broader astronomical expertise, giving them a well-rounded understanding of the field.Research is a central component of the program, with two projects totaling 60 EC. The first research project focuses on general astronomy, allowing students to develop strong scientific research skills, while the second project is specifically dedicated to instrumentation, offering hands-on experience in designing, building, and testing astronomical instruments. Through these research projects, students gain practical, real-world experience that prepares them for careers in academic research, space agencies, or high-tech industries.By combining rigorous coursework with in-depth research, the program equips graduates with both the scientific knowledge and technical expertise needed to advance the development and application of astronomical instruments, as well as the skills to contribute to cutting-edge observational and experimental astronomy.
