COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s specialisation in Space Science and Technology at Leiden University combines advanced astrophysics with high-tech innovation to prepare students for careers at the forefront of space research and industry. Students design a tailored Master Study Plan in consultation with the Study Advisor Astronomy, detailing all courses and research projects over the two-year program. The curriculum is divided into two main components: Astronomy and High-Tech Innovation, each accounting for 60 EC, giving students a balanced mix of scientific and technological expertise. The Astronomy component includes core courses in astronomy (18 EC), electives focused on astronomical instrumentation (12 EC), and a Master’s Research Project in Astronomy (30 EC), allowing students to gain in-depth knowledge of astrophysical concepts and hands-on experience with space instrumentation. The High-Tech Innovation component covers an orientation course (3 EC), core electives in innovation (27 EC), and a research project in collaboration with industry or high-tech partners (30 EC). This ensures that students not only understand the scientific basis of space exploration but also learn to develop and apply cutting-edge technologies in practical, real-world contexts.Educational methods include lectures, practical classes, working groups, lab work, research projects, individual papers, presentations, and colloquia, giving students ample opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and develop professional skills. Assessment is conducted through written and oral exams, homework assignments, presentations, reports, and scientific papers, reflecting the program’s emphasis on both academic rigor and applied research.Graduates of this program are well-equipped for careers in research institutions, space agencies, and private aerospace companies, or for further academic study at the PhD level. By integrating astronomy with high-tech innovation, the Space Science and Technology program trains students to contribute to pioneering space missions, advance our understanding of the cosmos, and develop technologies with meaningful scientific and industrial impact.
