COURSE CURRICULUM

Leiden University’s Master’s specialisation in Astronomy and Cosmology offers a comprehensive two-year program designed to train students in both theoretical and observational aspects of the Universe. At the start of the program, students develop a Master Study Plan in consultation with the study advisor, outlining the courses and research projects for the two years. The curriculum is structured into courses and research components, combining mandatory and elective modules to provide both breadth and depth in astronomy and physics.The courses component, worth 60 EC, includes 24 EC of mandatory courses—12 EC in Astronomy and 12 EC in Physics—covering fundamental concepts and advanced topics necessary for modern cosmology. In addition, students select 36 EC of electives, with 24 EC in Astronomy and 12 EC in Physics, allowing them to tailor their study path according to their specific research interests and career goals.The research component, also totaling 60 EC, comprises two major projects. The first is a 30 EC Research Project in General Astronomy, which develops essential research skills and introduces students to independent scientific inquiry. This is followed by the Master’s Research Project in Cosmology, also 30 EC, in which students undertake advanced, original research under the guidance of expert faculty, often involving observational data, simulations, and theoretical analysis.Educational methods include lectures, working groups, practical classes, individual papers, lab work, presentations, colloquia, and extensive research projects. Students are assessed through written and oral exams, homework assignments, presentations, and scientific reports, ensuring rigorous training in both academic and practical skills. By the end of the program, graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers in academic research, observatories, data-intensive industries, or further study such as a PhD in cosmology or related fields.
