COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Mathematics master’s specialisation at Leiden University offers a flexible and individually tailored program that allows students to design their own academic pathway according to their interests and career goals. Each student’s study plan is customised, combining rigorous coursework with hands-on research experience. The curriculum requires a minimum of 120 EC, consisting of advanced courses (at least 60 EC), a research project in mathematics (at least 40 EC, including 7 EC for the thesis and an oral presentation), and a free choice of courses from any field (up to 20 EC).The advanced coursework provides a solid foundation across a broad range of mathematical fields. Students can choose from subjects such as differential equations, dynamical systems, analysis of industrial problems, measure and integration theory, probability theory, statistics, functional analysis, numerical analysis, and operations research. This wide selection ensures that students can either specialise in a focused area or create an interdisciplinary combination that matches their academic and professional ambitions.A major component of the program is the research project, which allows students to engage in independent mathematical research while working closely with a faculty supervisor. This project culminates in a written thesis and an oral presentation, giving students valuable experience in communicating complex mathematical ideas clearly and effectively. The strong emphasis on research not only prepares students for academic careers and PhD study but also for roles that require advanced analytical and problem-solving skills in industry, data science, finance, and engineering.The teaching methods are varied and designed to support both theoretical understanding and applied practice. Students learn through lectures, seminars, working groups, computer assignments, and literature study, complemented by individual papers and presentations. Self-study plays an important role, ensuring students develop independence and critical thinking skills.
