COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s specialisation in Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory at Leiden University is designed for students who wish to deepen their knowledge in advanced mathematics with a strong focus on number theory in the broadest sense. The program ranges from discrete dynamical systems to arithmetic geometry and motives, placing strong emphasis on algebraic methods as well as computational aspects of modern mathematics. Cryptology is also included as an integral part of the curriculum, providing a bridge between pure mathematics and real-world applications. What makes this program unique is its flexibility: each student’s study path is individually tailored. You will select at least 60 EC of advanced courses from algebra, algebraic and analytic number theory, algebraic and differential geometry, and cryptology. Alongside this, a substantial research project of at least 40 EC will give you the opportunity to work independently on a specialised topic and develop your skills as a researcher. To broaden your expertise, you may also take up to 20 EC of courses from other fields, ensuring that the total program amounts to at least 120 EC. The teaching methods used in this master’s are varied and dynamic. You will learn through lectures, seminars, and working groups, while also engaging in computer assignments, individual papers, literature study, and presentations. This combination ensures that you gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical research experience and academic skills. Self-study forms an important part of the program, encouraging you to take ownership of your learning.
