COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s specialisation in Advanced Computing and Systems at Leiden University is a forward-looking program that equips students with advanced knowledge and skills in high-performance computing, embedded systems, cloud computing, and distributed computing. The curriculum is structured to provide a balanced combination of theoretical foundations, specialised courses, and practical research experience.The program begins with a core component worth 36 EC, which covers fundamental concepts in computer science, system architecture, algorithms, and software development. These courses establish the essential knowledge and technical skills needed to tackle complex computing problems.The second component consists of 42 EC of specialisation courses and seminars. Here, students dive deeper into advanced topics, including parallel and distributed systems, optimisation of computing resources, embedded system design, and cloud infrastructure. Seminars and project-based assignments allow students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world computing challenges, fostering problem-solving, analytical, and research skills.The final component is the Master’s Thesis Research Project, also worth 42 EC. During this phase, students conduct independent research under the supervision of faculty, addressing a specialised topic in advanced computing and systems. This project develops critical thinking, technical expertise, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.Graduates of this specialisation are well-prepared for careers in industry, research institutions, or technology-driven organisations, where expertise in high-performance and distributed computing is in high demand.
