COURSE CURRICULUM

The Visual Ethnography specialisation is structured to guide students through the full research and production process of ethnographic audiovisual work. In the fall semester, students develop their own visual ethnography research project, which includes a thesis proposal and a portfolio film, establishing the foundation for their fieldwork. During the winter, students conduct 2.5 months of fieldwork, producing audiovisual materials that capture the social and cultural phenomena under study. In the spring, students analyse the collected materials and edit a montage of key sequences, forming the basis of their final multimodal thesis. The program concludes in the summer with the completion of an ethnographic film and/or an expanded multimedia production, showcasing the research outcomes in a visually compelling format.The coursework supports this hands-on approach and includes Contemporary Anthropological Social Theory (10 EC), which provides the theoretical framework for understanding social dynamics and ethnographic practice. Research Design for Visual Ethnography (5 EC) and Research Proposal for Visual Ethnography (5 EC) equip students with the methodological and planning skills necessary for effective fieldwork. The Ethnographic Fieldwork course (20 EC) forms the core practical component, enabling immersive research experiences. Students also participate in a Thesis Seminar for Visual Ethnography (5 EC), guiding them through the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of their data. Finally, the Master Thesis Project (15 EC) allows students to synthesise their research and audiovisual production into a comprehensive scholarly work.
