COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master's program in Crisis and Security Management at Leiden University is a one-year, full-time program that equips students to understand and address contemporary security challenges from both local and global perspectives. It emphasizes the complexity of security and crisis management issues, often referred to as ‘wicked problems,’ which arise in a globalizing and interconnected world.This program is unique in the Netherlands for its combination of common courses and specialised track modules, alongside a strong focus on developing both academic and professional skills. Students gain in-depth knowledge of security challenges while simultaneously acquiring practical competencies that are directly applicable to professional contexts. Each specialisation track consists of four dedicated modules, complemented by three common courses that all students take, ensuring a solid foundation in crisis and security management.Upon application, students must choose a preferred specialisation. Each specialisation is designed as a coherent set of courses aimed at developing specific knowledge and skills relevant to that focus area. By committing to a single track, students become security professionals with both specialised expertise and a broad understanding of the general field. The program does not allow switching specialisations mid-year, maintaining the coherence and integrity of the curriculum.Throughout the year, students engage in a combination of lectures, seminars, practical exercises, and project work, fostering analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to design informed strategies for preventing, managing, and mitigating crises. Graduates are prepared for careers in governmental organisations, international institutions, consultancy, risk management, and security-focused research, with the skills to address complex challenges in a rapidly changing global landscape.
