COURSE CURRICULUM

The one-year, English-taught Master’s in Crisis and Security Management at Leiden University provides a comprehensive understanding of global security challenges, intelligence, and governance in complex political and societal contexts. The program equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical research skills needed to analyse, interpret, and respond to contemporary security issues, preparing them for careers in intelligence, security, policy, and research. It combines a strong academic foundation with opportunities to engage with real-world crises, cybersecurity, and intelligence operations. The curriculum is structured around core courses, specialisation courses, an elective, and a portfolio, offering both breadth and depth. In the first semester, students take foundational courses including Security Challenges in a Globalizing World and Security: Actors, Institutions and Constellations, which explore the social, political, and organisational dimensions of security, such as ontological insecurity, multilevel governance, and cyber threats. Specialisation courses such as Intelligence a Changing World and Intelligence and Conflict in the Digital Era focus on intelligence practices, ethics, globalisation, and the role of digital technologies in modern conflict and security. The second semester includes courses on Security and the Rule of Law, Intelligence and Policymaking, and Intelligence and Influence, where students examine democratic security governance, the intelligence-policy interface, and covert influence activities. A five EC elective allows students to further specialise or gain practical experience through internships. The one EC Portfolio course integrates research skills, reflection, and professional development. Students compile assignments, research papers, and a reflection paper to demonstrate the competencies and knowledge they have acquired. The portfolio serves as both a graduation requirement and a tool for labour market preparation, showcasing research, analytical, and critical thinking skills to potential employers. The portfolio defense provides an opportunity to present and discuss these achievements formally.Through this combination of coursework, practical skills development, and reflection, the Crisis and Security Management program prepares graduates to analyse complex security environments, understand intelligence operations, and contribute effectively to national and international security, policy, and research contexts.
