COURSE CURRICULUM
The Parties and Elections master’s specialisation at Leiden University focuses on understanding contemporary political developments in the Netherlands, particularly the challenges facing modern democracies such as fragmentation, polarization, and the rise of populism. Students explore how Dutch political institutions function in practice, examining the mechanisms of government, coalition formation, and the role of parties and interest groups in shaping policy. The program emphasises both theoretical and practical knowledge, offering insights into voter behaviour, party competition, and democratic accountability.Central to the specialisation is the core course on Dutch political institutions, taught in Dutch, where students analyse the functioning of key political bodies in The Hague and assess strategies for strengthening democracy. In addition to this core course, students select thematic seminars that allow for comparative analysis with other countries on topics such as party systems, interest group influence, and electoral dynamics. Under certain conditions, students may also complete an internship, providing hands-on experience in political research or advisory roles. All courses are taught in small groups, fostering close interaction with lecturers and fellow students, and allowing for personalised guidance and support. The master’s program culminates in a thesis, written as part of the Dutch Politics seminar, where students conduct original research on a topic of their choice within Dutch politics.By combining rigorous political science theory with empirical research and practical engagement, the program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to analyse contemporary Dutch politics in depth. Graduates are prepared for careers in academia, government, political consultancy, journalism, or civil service, with the ability to contribute to research, policy design, and public debate. Through small-group teaching, seminars, internships, and thesis work, students gain a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Dutch democracy, its institutions, and the contemporary challenges it faces.
