COURSE CURRICULUM

The Comparative Criminal Justice master’s program at Leiden University is designed to provide students with both theoretical and practical insights into contemporary criminal justice issues, emphasising a cross-national and multidisciplinary perspective. Students are encouraged to adopt an international focus that extends beyond Western Europe and the United States, critically reflecting on how key concepts such as effectiveness, accountability, and legitimacy translate across different sociopolitical contexts. This global orientation allows students to understand how legal frameworks, policies, and practices vary across countries, as well as how supranational institutions and laws, including EU criminal law and human rights law, influence national systems in diverse ways. Throughout the program, courses take a comparative approach, addressing the impact of globalisation, the transformation of policing, and the ways in which citizens perceive fairness and justice at different stages of the criminal process. The curriculum combines academic depth with real-world engagement. Students explore the social and legal dilemmas faced by political and judicial institutions in governing security, guaranteeing safety, and responding to national and international crises. Attention is given to traditional actors in the justice system, such as courts, police, and correctional facilities, while also addressing the growing influence of non-state actors, private policing, private prisons, and the increasingly important intersection of crime control and migration control, known as “crimmigration.” Teaching methods integrate legal and empirical research, enabling students to build strong analytical and methodological skills. Visits to Dutch and international institutions such as prisons, Eurojust, and the European Parliament further enrich the program, offering direct insights into law in action.By the end of the program, students are equipped to conduct original comparative criminal justice research, culminating in the master’s thesis. This combination of theory, practice, and international scope prepares graduates for careers in academia, international organisations, government, and policy-making, as well as in legal and criminological practice.
