COURSE CURRICULUM

The Research MA in Cities, Migration and Global Interdependence at Leiden University is structured to combine intensive coursework, research training, and independent thesis work, providing a comprehensive preparation for advanced academic and professional careers. The program begins with an eight-week Literature Seminar, introducing students to recent insights and key issues in the field. This foundation allows students to engage critically with both contemporary debates and historical perspectives on cities, migration, economic development, and global interdependence.Students participate in two Research Seminars, where they carry out independent research using primary sources or published documents. The first Research Seminar is taken during the first semester, while the second can be completed in the second semester or during a period abroad, offering flexibility and international exposure. A compulsory Historical Theory course examines major problems in historical theory and philosophy, including explanations, models, intentions, narratives, objectivity, ethics, and comparative approaches.The tutorial forms a central component of the program, offering intensive one-on-one discussions with Leiden specialists to help students refine their research focus and develop a clear thesis question. In addition, students take courses at a Research School (minimum 10 EC), selected in consultation with the Coordinator of Studies, to gain training in methodology and area-specific knowledge relevant to their research interests. The Developing Research Proposals course further strengthens research skills by guiding students from initial research question formulation to preparing proposals suitable for publication or academic review.Students may also choose Optional Courses (up to 20 EC), which can be taken abroad or within Leiden, allowing for tailored academic enrichment. The program culminates in the Research MA thesis, supervised by faculty members. Upon completion, students defend their thesis in a final ceremony, demonstrating their mastery of research methods, critical analysis, and subject expertise. This structure ensures that graduates possess strong theoretical knowledge, practical research experience, and the analytical skills required for careers in academia, policy-making, or international organisations.
