COURSE CURRICULUM

The one-year MA in Southeast Asian Studies at Leiden University provides a structured yet flexible curriculum that combines core courses, electives, a research seminar, and an MA thesis. In the first semester, all students take the compulsory core course Introduction to Asian Studies, which situates the study of Asia within the broader context of Area Studies. In addition, students follow two Southeast Asia-specific core courses that focus on perspectives on Southeast Asian history and the politics of culture in the region. Elective courses allow students to explore issues, debates, and methodologies from a disciplinary perspective with a regional focus on one or more countries in Southeast Asia.In the second semester, students continue with one or two electives, which can be partially substituted by an internship, while simultaneously preparing and writing their MA thesis, worth 15 EC. The thesis provides an opportunity to conduct independent research, applying theoretical knowledge and methodological skills to a topic of the student’s choice, and integrating insights gained throughout the program.Students also have the option of taking an intensive modern Indonesian language course in place of an elective in both semesters, providing practical language skills alongside academic training and enhancing their ability to engage with the region. Learning is supported through seminars, group discussions, research assignments, and independent study, fostering critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and research competence.This program equips graduates with in-depth knowledge of Southeast Asia, preparing them for careers in research, academia, international organisations, government, cultural institutions, and other sectors requiring regional expertise.
