COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s program in Philosophy of Knowledge at Leiden University is structured to provide a comprehensive grounding in analytic and theoretical philosophy. In the first semester, students follow a mandatory introductory seminar entitled Relativism and Objectivity, which examines fundamental questions concerning the nature of knowledge, truth, and objectivity. This seminar introduces students to critical debates in epistemology and prepares them for more specialized study.In addition to the core seminar, students select three elective courses in Theoretical Philosophy, each worth 10 EC. These electives allow students to focus on specific areas of interest, such as the philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of language, or formal epistemology. This structure ensures both depth and breadth of knowledge, enabling students to develop a nuanced understanding of philosophical theory and methodology.In the second semester, students undertake a master’s thesis, worth 20 EC, which represents an independent academic contribution to the field of Theoretical Philosophy. The thesis is supported by a mandatory thesis seminar, providing guidance and opportunities for peer discussion. Students are expected to demonstrate critical thinking, originality, and rigorous analytical skills in their research. Before graduation, they defend their thesis in an oral examination and may answer additional questions covering relevant philosophical topics.Assessment throughout the program is based on a combination of class presentations, written assignments, and final research papers. This approach ensures that students develop both practical skills in philosophical analysis and strong written and oral communication abilities. The program equips students with the expertise necessary for academic research, advanced studies, or careers requiring rigorous analytical and critical reasoning skills.
