COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Leiden University is structured to provide a balanced combination of core coursework, electives, practical experience, and research. In the first semester, students take the mandatory core seminar, Politics and Economy: Philosophical Foundations, which provides a rigorous grounding in the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of political and economic systems.In addition to the core seminar, students select three optional courses totaling 30 EC, with two taken in the first semester and one in the second semester. These electives allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests within the intersections of philosophy, politics, and economics. One of the optional courses can be replaced with an internship, providing practical experience in research institutions, governmental organizations, or other relevant professional settings.The program culminates in the master’s thesis, worth 20 EC, which represents an independent academic contribution. Students explore a research question of their choice, applying philosophical analysis to issues in politics and economics under the guidance of a supervisor.Throughout the program, students engage in seminars, independent study, and academic writing, developing analytical, critical, and problem-solving skills applicable in both academic and professional contexts. The combination of foundational coursework, tailored electives, optional practical experience, and thesis research equips graduates to pursue careers in public policy, international organizations, research institutions, or continue into advanced academic study.
