COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s specialisation in Museum Studies at Leiden University offers a comprehensive academic and practical framework for understanding the role of museums in artistic, cultural, social and political contexts. Taught by art historians and museum professionals, the courses combine theoretical reflection with real-world perspectives, ensuring students engage with the latest debates in museology and art history. The program is structured around two core courses. The first introduces students to critical perspectives on collections, institutions, theories of interpretation and audience engagement with artworks. The second focuses on current curatorial practices and art exhibitions from transhistorical and global perspectives. In addition to these, students can select from a wide range of thematic electives in fields such as decorative arts, heritage studies, anthropology, ethics, memory studies, new media and digital humanities, allowing them to shape their studies around individual interests.The curriculum also includes a substantial thesis, offering students the chance to conduct independent research in their chosen field. Many complement this with internships, gaining invaluable practical experience at institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Volkenkunde, Haags Gemeentemuseum, Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunst and various galleries in Leiden, The Hague and Amsterdam. Past thesis projects have covered diverse topics ranging from curatorial practices in religious art to the ethics of using living animals in exhibitions, accessibility of museum websites and post-conflict heritage management.Leiden’s proximity to internationally renowned institutions like the Rijksmuseum, the National Museum of Antiquities and the Museum for the History of Science provides students with unparalleled access to collections and resources. Learning is delivered through seminars, masterclasses, excursions and self-study, with assessments including presentations, portfolios, essays and the final thesis.
