COURSE CURRICULUM

The program structure of the master’s specialisation in Moral and Political Philosophy at Leiden University is designed to provide both breadth and depth in the field while giving students the opportunity to develop their own research interests. The first semester begins with a mandatory introductory seminar, Practical Philosophy: Contemporary Debates, which provides a strong foundation by engaging students with central discussions and concepts in the field. Alongside this seminar, students choose three elective courses worth 10 EC each, enabling them to tailor their studies to specific themes and questions within moral and political philosophy. These electives cover a wide range of topics and allow students to develop specialised expertise in areas that align with their personal interests and career ambitions.In the second semester, the focus shifts towards independent research and writing. Students undertake their master’s thesis, which is worth 20 EC, and attend a mandatory thesis seminar designed to provide guidance and peer feedback throughout the process. The thesis represents an independent academic contribution to the discipline and offers students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to engage with complex philosophical issues in depth. Before graduation, students are required to sit for a final oral examination. In this exam, they defend their thesis and may also be asked questions about related topics to demonstrate their broader understanding of the field.Assessment throughout the program is based on a combination of class presentations, assignments, and final research papers, ensuring that students develop strong analytical, writing, and communication skills. The small-scale and intensive seminar setting encourages close interaction with faculty and peers, fostering a stimulating environment for critical discussion and debate.
