COURSE CURRICULUM

The program structure of the master’s in Modern European Philosophy at Leiden University is designed to provide both a solid foundation and flexibility for in-depth exploration. In the first semester, all students follow a mandatory introductory seminar on German Idealism, which serves as the grounding point for understanding the development of continental philosophy. Alongside this, you select three elective courses of 10 EC each in the area of Modern European Philosophy, giving you the freedom to tailor your studies around your own philosophical interests. Starting from September 2026, you will also be able to choose from courses in the new MA 120 Philosophy of the Arts, further broadening your academic options.In the second semester, the focus shifts to independent research and writing. You will take part in a mandatory thesis seminar, which provides guidance and feedback as you prepare your master’s thesis (20 EC). The thesis is expected to be an original contribution to the field of Modern European Philosophy, reflecting both systematic and historical perspectives. Once completed, you will defend your thesis in an oral examination, which may also include questions about related philosophical subjects.Assessment throughout the program is varied, combining class presentations, assignments, and a final research paper. This structure ensures that you not only deepen your theoretical understanding but also develop advanced skills in academic writing, critical thinking, and philosophical dialogue.
