COURSE CURRICULUM

The Global Political Economy specialisation within the Master’s in International Relations at Leiden University offers students an in-depth and critical understanding of the world economy and its social and political foundations. The program structure includes one specialisation core course, two general courses, a thesis preparatory course, two electives, and a final Master’s thesis. The thesis preparatory course introduces students to key conceptual, methodological, and theoretical issues, supplemented by seminars that cover specific topics in international studies. Students then work closely with thesis supervisors to independently develop and complete their research projects. In addition to the academic coursework, students have the opportunity to undertake internships at organisations in the Netherlands or abroad, including the Dutch Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, embassies, media outlets, the Netherlands Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Clingendael Institute, the International Centre for Counterterrorism, and the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies. These internships provide valuable practical experience, enhancing both professional development and insight into global economic and political dynamics. The program is taught by a diverse team of experienced academics and professionals, offering a wide range of perspectives and expertise. Students are encouraged to critically analyse global markets, trade, finance, and economic governance while understanding their intersections with political and social structures. The combination of rigorous academic training, research opportunities, and practical exposure prepares graduates for careers in international organisations, government institutions, research centres, and policy advisory roles. Overall, the specialisation equips students with the analytical tools and knowledge necessary to navigate, assess, and influence the complex processes shaping the global political economy in the twenty-first century.
