COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Classics and Ancient Civilizations at Leiden University is a two-semester program comprising 60 EC, designed to provide in-depth knowledge of Greek and Latin literature, linguistics, and the broader cultural-historical context of the ancient world. The curriculum combines rigorous study of classical texts with interdisciplinary approaches drawn from Ancient Philosophy, Ancient History, and Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity, enabling students to explore the intellectual, social, and cultural dimensions of antiquity.All students participate in two core courses. The Ancient World Thesis Seminar develops advanced academic writing skills, provides guidance on professional development and the job market, and encourages interdisciplinary research on classical civilizations. The Classics Now! seminar explores the contemporary relevance of classical studies, inviting students to apply ancient texts as analytical tools for examining modern societal issues, such as migration or movements like #MeToo.In addition to these core seminars, students take 35 EC of elective courses in Greek and Latin literature and linguistics, complemented by selected classes in cultural-historical disciplines. This combination allows students to tailor their program to their specific research interests, whether in literary analysis, philology, or historical and philosophical inquiry.The program culminates in a research-based thesis, where students formulate their own research question or hypothesis. This project involves close interpretation of classical texts and/or an exploration of linguistic or literary concepts, demonstrating mastery of analytical, methodological, and scholarly skills. By integrating rigorous coursework, interdisciplinary perspectives, and independent research, the MA in Classics and Ancient Civilizations equips graduates with the expertise required for advanced research, academic careers, or other professional paths that benefit from deep understanding of classical antiquity.
