COURSE CURRICULUM
The master’s program in Arts and Culture at Leiden University is structured to provide both academic depth and practical engagement, allowing students to develop expertise in art history and museum studies. The program can be started in either September or February, with the curriculum carefully organized into core courses, electives, and a thesis project. For students starting in September, the first semester begins with Core Course I, Critical Perspectives in Art History and Museum Studies (10 EC), which introduces essential theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and debates in both art history and curatorial studies. Alongside this, students choose two thematic electives (2 x 10 EC) that allow them to explore specialized topics in areas such as visual culture, heritage studies, or global art movements. The second semester focuses on Core Course II, Art History and Curatorial Practice (10 EC), providing practical skills and insights into curatorial processes, collection management, and exhibition design. Students conclude the program with a 20 EC thesis, in which they carry out an independent research project under the guidance of faculty. For students beginning in February, the sequence is slightly adjusted. The first semester consists of Core Course I, Critical Perspectives in Art History and Museum Studies (10 EC), along with the thesis project (20 EC). The second semester covers Core Course II, Art History and Curatorial Practice (10 EC) and the two thematic electives (2 x 10 EC). This flexible scheduling ensures that students entering the program in either academic term can complete all requirements while maintaining continuity and cohesion in their studies.Throughout the program, students engage with seminars, lectures, and research assignments that encourage critical thinking, independent research, and practical application of knowledge. By integrating theoretical and practical perspectives, the curriculum prepares graduates to pursue careers in museums, galleries, heritage institutions, or continue into academic research, equipped with a comprehensive understanding of both art historical scholarship and curatorial practice.
