COURSE CURRICULUM

The Advanced Master’s in International Financial Law at Leiden University equips students with specialised legal knowledge and practical skills to operate at the intersection of law, regulation, and financial markets. The program addresses the complex regulatory frameworks that govern financial institutions, markets, and transactions, with particular attention to contemporary challenges such as sustainability, digitalisation, and financial inclusion. Students gain the expertise needed to navigate economic and legal realities, advising financial institutions, companies, and investors on regulatory compliance and strategic decision-making.Teaching is delivered in small, seminar-style classes that encourage active participation, discussion, and engagement with complex financial law topics. Instruction is provided by faculty members from Leiden Law School’s Hazelhoff Centre for Financial Law as well as distinguished legal practitioners with expertise in international law, financial regulation, and related fields. Students also benefit from hands-on activities, including drafting exercises, simulations, and practical assignments, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.Student support is central to the program. A dedicated program coordinator assists with practical and academic questions throughout the duration of the LL.M., complemented by study and career workshops, alumni guidance through career cafés, and access to the Law School’s Career Advisor.The program is guided by an Advisory Board comprising leading figures from financial institutions, law firms, and regulatory bodies, ensuring that the curriculum remains aligned with the skills required for modern financial lawyers. Members include representatives from the European Central Bank, ABN AMRO Bank, Clifford Chance, NL Financial Investments, and leading law firms, providing insight into the evolving legal and regulatory landscape of international finance.Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in international law firms, financial institutions, regulatory authorities, consultancy agencies, and arbitration or dispute resolution contexts. They develop the ability to provide strategic legal advice, draft complex contracts, and navigate regulatory and compliance challenges effectively, combining rigorous academic training with professional, practice-oriented skills.
