COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Laws in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration (LL.M.) at Leiden University provides an advanced focus on the principles and methods of resolving disputes under international law, with a particular emphasis on international arbitration. The program allows students to specialise in international dispute settlement while connecting this expertise to related areas of law, such as arbitration in the context of international commercial law.The curriculum combines academic rigour with practical experience, offering opportunities to participate in moot courts, workshops, program trips, and group exercises. These activities allow students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, develop advocacy and negotiation skills, and gain insight into the professional practice of international arbitration. Classes are taught in a seminar format, encouraging active participation, discussion, and critical engagement. Students also have access to individual consultations with expert lecturers from a variety of professional and academic backgrounds. In addition to coursework, students are encouraged to participate in academic activities beyond the classroom, including conferences, field trips, and professional visits, which enrich learning and networking opportunities. The program concludes with the preparation of a thesis, allowing students to conduct original research in a specialised area of international dispute settlement and arbitration.Student support is central to the program. The program coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for practical and academic guidance throughout the duration of the LL.M. Students also benefit from study and career workshops, access to alumni guidance through career cafés, and consultations with the Law School’s Career Advisor, helping them prepare for professional careers in international arbitration and dispute resolution.Graduates of the LL.M. are well-prepared for careers in international law firms, multinational corporations, arbitral institutions, government agencies, and international organisations, with the skills and knowledge to handle complex disputes, draft arbitration agreements, and contribute effectively to the evolving practice of international dispute settlement.
