COURSE CURRICULUM
The Advanced Master’s specialisation in International Criminal Law at Leiden University provides an in-depth understanding of the systemic environment surrounding international criminal law and its connections to related legal fields. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to analyse, apply, and advance international criminal law, including substantive criminal law, criminal procedure, and the functioning of international criminal courts and tribunals such as the International Criminal Court and ad hoc tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.Students are specifically trained in criminal procedure, advocacy, and cross-examination, with classes incorporating real-life assignments. They practice drafting, arguing, and defending motions individually or in teams, guided by practising lawyers or litigation specialists. This hands-on approach ensures that theoretical knowledge is directly connected to professional practice, enabling graduates to navigate complex international cases effectively. The curriculum also addresses broader aspects of international criminal law, including its relationship with human rights, the prosecution of international crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and the legal mechanisms used to combat terrorism. Students explore both the legal and practical challenges of prosecuting international crimes, including the interaction between international and national jurisdictions.Classes are delivered primarily in seminar format, two to three hours per session, multiple times per week, encouraging active participation, discussion, and practical engagement. Students are also invited to engage in academic activities outside the curriculum, such as conferences, workshops, field trips, and internships. The program concludes with an individually supervised thesis that allows students to conduct original research in their area of interest.Student support is central to the program, with a dedicated program coordinator, study and career workshops, alumni guidance, and access to the Law School’s Career Advisor. Graduates emerge prepared for careers in international criminal law, human rights organisations, governmental institutions, policy-making, and academic research, equipped with both theoretical expertise and practical skills essential for pursuing justice on a global scale.
