COURSE CURRICULUM

The Advanced Master in European and International Business Law at Leiden University is structured to provide students with in-depth knowledge of EU law and its interaction with global economic law while combining rigorous academic training with practical, professional applications. Courses are taught by internationally renowned faculty as well as guest lecturers holding senior positions in law firms, international courts, and business organisations, ensuring that students benefit from both scholarly insight and real-world expertise. Teaching is grounded in the Law School’s distinguished research program, “The progression of EU law: accommodating change and upholding values,” which explores how EU legal frameworks adapt to evolving economic and societal contexts while maintaining foundational principles. Students are trained in the case method approach and the combined research/knowledge transfer approach, enabling them to analyse complex legal problems critically and systematically. The program emphasises the development of key academic and professional skills: students learn to apply their legal knowledge, experience, and analytical abilities in professional environments; to formulate precise research questions and design strategies to address and test these questions; and to employ appropriate legal research methods and tools. In addition, students are trained to present and communicate their findings effectively, both in academic settings and in professional contexts such as law firms, corporations, and regulatory institutions. Through a combination of seminars, research projects, and interactive lectures, the program equips graduates with advanced legal, analytical, and problem-solving competencies, preparing them for careers in international law, corporate counsel, policy advising, or further academic research. By integrating theoretical rigour with practical application and comparative perspectives, the Advanced Master in European and International Business Law provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how EU law shapes enterprise, governance, and innovation within a globalised legal and economic landscape.
