COURSE CURRICULUM

The Science for Sustainable Societies bachelor’s program at Leiden University is a three-year interdisciplinary degree designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to address complex environmental and sustainability challenges. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation in both natural and social sciences, studying disciplines such as ecology, earth system sciences, anthropology, psychology, and governance. Courses cover biodiversity, energy flow, ecosystem functioning, and the impact of human activities on climate and the environment. Students also explore the interaction between societies, economies, and the environment, as well as how human behaviour affects ecological outcomes. Key academic skills such as scientific methods, mathematics, academic writing, and understanding diversity in science are integrated into the curriculum.The second year builds on this foundation, emphasising the interconnectedness of natural and social sciences. Many courses are jointly taught by lecturers from both domains, highlighting how different perspectives can complement each other in understanding sustainability issues. Students develop the analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to address complex sustainability challenges, considering both scientific and societal dimensions. The interdisciplinary approach encourages creative thinking and equips students to design evidence-based solutions for real-world problems.In the third year, students have the opportunity to explore their personal interests through electives, a minor, or study abroad. While internships are not part of the formal program, students may pursue external opportunities with guidance from their study advisor. The year culminates in the Sustainable Societies Project, where students apply their knowledge to a real-life sustainability challenge. They also complete a final thesis based on independent research, demonstrating their ability to integrate natural and social sciences to analyse problems and propose practical solutions.Graduates of the program are prepared to become sustainability changemakers, equipped to tackle global challenges in research, policy, consultancy, and other professional or academic contexts. By combining interdisciplinary study with practical application, the Science for Sustainable Societies program empowers students to make a meaningful impact on society and the planet.
