COURSE CURRICULUM
The bachelor’s program in Computational Thinking and Data Science at Leiden University is designed for students with a strong interest in programming, computer science, and the fields of cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence. It combines rigorous theoretical training with practical applications, while also addressing the ethical and societal dimensions of data-driven technologies. The aim is to provide students with a well-rounded foundation that prepares them for both advanced study and professional careers in artificial intelligence, data science, and related areas. In the first year, students acquire a solid grounding in mathematics and computer science, which are the cornerstones of data science and artificial intelligence. They are introduced to logical reasoning, programming, algorithms, databases, and mathematical methods, ensuring they understand the computational and analytical foundations of the field. Alongside these technical courses, students develop academic skills and methodological awareness, including how to evaluate information critically and conduct research effectively. Special emphasis is also placed on the social and ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence and data science, encouraging students to consider the broader impact of their work. The second year builds on this foundation by focusing on specialised areas within AI and data science. Students study search and decision-making processes, cognitive and behavioural data science, autonomous and multi-agent systems, statistics, human-robot interaction, and machine learning. They also deepen their knowledge of computational models and algorithms, gaining insights into both the theoretical principles and the practical implementation of intelligent systems. This combination of coursework and applied study helps students bridge the gap between abstract concepts and real-world challenges. In the third year, students are given the freedom to shape their studies according to their interests and future goals. They can choose electives, pursue a minor at Leiden, Delft, or Erasmus University Rotterdam (LDE), or study abroad. The year culminates in an individual research project worth 15 EC, where students either contribute to an ongoing research project or design an independent study in collaboration with a research group. This final project allows them to demonstrate their ability to conduct original research, integrate theoretical knowledge with practice, and present findings clearly. By combining technical expertise, research experience, and critical awareness, the program prepares graduates to contribute meaningfully to the rapidly evolving fields of artificial intelligence and data science.
