COURSE CURRICULUM

The Urban Studies bachelor’s program at Leiden University is a three-year interdisciplinary degree designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to address contemporary urban challenges. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in urbanisation, learning about the historical development of cities, their social, economic, and cultural dynamics, and their ecological footprint. Core academic and methodological skills are introduced, including research design, data analysis, statistical methods, and academic writing. Field trips to The Hague and other Dutch cities provide practical insights into urban issues and allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.In the second year, students deepen their understanding of urban issues, focusing on challenges faced by local governments, businesses, and urban populations. The program’s four thematic areas—the sustainable city, the safe city, the multicultural city, and the healthy city—provide a framework for study, with students selecting two themes as their specialisation. Methodological and academic skills continue to be developed through hands-on assignments and excursions, fostering practical experience and critical thinking in analysing complex urban problems.The third year offers flexibility to tailor the program to individual goals. In the first semester, students may study abroad, complete a minor, or undertake an internship to gain practical work experience. The second semester focuses on advanced research and applied projects. Students participate in the Research Lab course to investigate a specific urban topic, while their bachelor’s thesis provides the opportunity to conduct in-depth academic research within one of the four thematic areas.Graduates of the Urban Studies program emerge with strong analytical, research, and practical skills, enabling them to address pressing urban challenges. They are well-prepared for careers in urban planning, policy-making, consultancy, research, and international organisations, or to continue with advanced studies in urban and regional planning.
